Getting around Sri Lanka

How to get around Sri Lanka as a visitor. Trains, private drivers, tuk tuks, buses and ride-hailing apps compared, with honest tips on cost, comfort and time.

Updated 28 October 2026

You have four main options in Sri Lanka, and most good trips mix them.

Private car with driver

This is how most visitors travel, and for good reason. A driver picks you up at your hotel, handles the roads and stops wherever you want: tea factories, viewpoints, roadside fruit stalls.

  • Good for: families, couples with luggage, anyone on a tight schedule.
  • What it costs: usually charged per day or per route. TODO: verify typical daily rates for car and van.
  • Tips: agree in writing what is included (fuel, driver’s food and room, parking, highway tolls). Good drivers often double as informal guides.

Trains

Sri Lankan trains are slow, cheap and wonderful. The hill country line, especially the Kandy to Ella train, is a highlight of many trips. The coastal line from Colombo to Galle is also lovely.

  • Classes: first class (often an observation car or air-conditioned carriage), reserved second and third class, and unreserved carriages. TODO: verify current classes on each route.
  • Booking: reserved seats sell out in high season. TODO: verify current booking window and online booking site.
  • Tips: trains are often late. Do not plan a tight connection after a train.

Tuk tuks

Three-wheelers are everywhere and great for short trips.

  • Use apps where you can: PickMe and Uber both offer tuk tuks in Colombo and many towns, with fixed prices.
  • Otherwise, agree the price before you get in. Some tuk tuks have meters; most do not use them.
  • Day hire: in places like Kandy, Ella or Galle, hiring a tuk tuk for a few hours is a fun way to see the area.

Buses

Buses go everywhere and cost very little. They are also crowded, fast and not designed for big suitcases. Intercity air-conditioned buses on the expressways are more comfortable. Fine for adventurous travellers with light bags.

Domestic flights and seaplanes

There are limited domestic flight and seaplane services between a few points, such as Colombo and Jaffna or the east coast. TODO: verify current routes and operators.

Our recommendation

For a first trip of 10 days or more, a car with a driver plus one or two train rides gives the best mix of comfort and experience. We can connect you with a trusted local driver as part of your plan. Plan your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive yourself in Sri Lanka?

It is legal with the right permit, but most visitors find local driving stressful. Roads are narrow, buses overtake aggressively and there are animals and people on the road. Most travellers hire a car with a driver instead.

Are PickMe and Uber available in Sri Lanka?

Yes, in Colombo and several other cities and towns, for both cars and tuk tuks. Coverage is patchy in rural areas, so do not rely on them everywhere.

How far in advance should I book the Kandy to Ella train?

As early as you can in high season. Reserved seats can sell out weeks in advance. Booking windows and methods change, so check the current rules before you travel.
