Best time to visit Sri Lanka

When to visit Sri Lanka, explained simply. How the two monsoons work, the best months for the south and west coast vs the east coast, hill country, safaris and whales.

Updated 28 October 2026

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but where you go matters more than when. The island has two monsoons that hit opposite coasts at different times. Pick the right side and you will almost always find sun somewhere.

The short answer

If you travel in… Go to the beach on the… Notes
December to March South and west coast Peak season. Hill country also at its best.
April South, west or east Hot. A good shoulder month almost everywhere.
May to September East coast Southwest monsoon on the south and west.
October to November Fewer good options Inter-monsoon rain can hit most of the island.

How the monsoons work

The southwest monsoon (roughly May to September) brings rain to the west coast, the south coast and the hill country. The sea on the south and west gets rough, and many beach businesses close. The east and north stay mostly dry.

The northeast monsoon (roughly November to February) brings rain to the north, the east coast and parts of the Cultural Triangle. The south and west are dry and sunny.

Between them, in October and November, there is an inter-monsoon period when afternoon thunderstorms can happen almost anywhere. TODO: verify month boundaries are typical; monsoon timing shifts a little every year.

Month by month, in brief

  • January to March: the classic season. South and west coast beaches, whale watching in Mirissa, clear views in Ella and Kandy. Busiest and priciest time.
  • April: hot and humid. Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April means some businesses close for a few days and transport is busy.
  • May and June: the south starts to get wet. The east coast season begins. Yala is often good for leopards before its usual closure. TODO: verify Yala closure months.
  • July and August: east coast is excellent: Arugam Bay surf and Trincomalee beaches. Kandy’s Esala Perahera festival. Elephant gatherings at Minneriya.
  • September: still good on the east coast, quieter everywhere.
  • October and November: the least predictable months. Good value, but plan flexible days.
  • December: the south and west season starts. Christmas and New Year are very busy, so book early.

Hill country and the Cultural Triangle

The hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) is cooler and can get rain any time, but January to April is usually clearest. Mornings are better than afternoons all year.

The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) is in the dry zone. It is good for most of the year, with more rain from about October to December.

Wildlife and whale seasons

  • Blue whales off Mirissa: about November to April.
  • Whales off Trincomalee: about May to October.
  • Leopards in Yala: good most of the year when the park is open; the dry months often give better sightings.
  • Elephant gathering at Minneriya: usually July to October.

TODO: verify all wildlife season months against current local reports.

Our advice

Choose your dates first, then let the season decide which coast you finish on. A local planner will build the route around the weather for you. That is exactly what our Plan your trip form is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?

There is no single best month, because the two coasts have opposite seasons. For a classic trip with the south coast beaches, January to March is hard to beat. For the east coast, June to August is ideal.

Is it worth visiting Sri Lanka in the monsoon?

Often, yes. Monsoon rain usually comes in heavy bursts, not all day, and one side of the island is always in season. Prices are lower and sites are quieter. Just plan your beaches on the dry side.

When is it too hot in Sri Lanka?

March to May is the hottest period in the lowlands, before the southwest monsoon arrives. The hill country stays cool all year.
